When a member firm does not abide by their membership agreement, such as answering complaints, abiding by the Bureau's Code of Advertising Standards, agreeing to arbitrate, not maintaining competency licensing, then the BBB takes action to make sure those companies no longer remain a member and that this information is reported to the public.
In 2006, eight member companies were expelled from the BBB. Seven companies were expelled due to not responding to consumer complaints and one was expelled for not maintaining required competency licensing. When a company becomes a member of the BBB, they agree to respond to any and all correspondence sent to them by the Bureau. Once a member company stops abiding by their membership agreement, they loose consumer confidence and the confidence of the BBB. Our member companies are held to higher ethical standards because that is what it takes to be a BBB member.
